**London, UK** – While Ozempic-like medications have proven effective for adults with type 2 diabetes and weight loss, concerns are growing regarding their use in children, particularly those under 12.
These drugs, known as GLP-1 receptor analogs, work by mimicking a fullness hormone, suppressing appetite and aiding weight management. While some versions are FDA-approved for children with obesity as young as 12 and diabetes as young as 10, doctors express caution.
“We really don’t know what the long-term consequences are at this point,” states Dr. Kay Rhee, Medical Director of the Medical Behavioral Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego.
Despite the unknowns, Dr. Carolyn Jasik, Chief Medical Officer at Omada Health, notes a significant rise in prescriptions among children. Data from Komodo Health reveals that nearly 60% of pediatric patients on GLP-1 agents in 2023 were new users, suggesting a growing trend despite the drug’s availability since 2019.
Dr. Brian Erly, Medical Director of EDCare, specializing in eating disorders, voices concerns about the lack of thorough evaluation before prescription. He also emphasizes the unknown long-term effects of these drugs on developing bodies, especially considering potential weight regain after discontinuation.
While studies show positive effects in adolescents, including significant weight loss, they also highlight common gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, affecting up to 40% of participants. Some experience headaches, fatigue, and in rare cases, pancreatitis or thyroid conditions.
Experts also worry about the potential risk of eating disorders, particularly in children predisposed to such conditions. The drugs’ effects on food reward pathways could exacerbate existing issues.
However, Dr. Jasik counters that weight loss within the context of obesity generally improves mental health, emphasizing the negative impact of stigma and pressure. She believes the greatest risk remains weight regain upon discontinuation, stressing the importance of establishing healthy eating and exercise habits.
All experts emphasize the necessity of physician supervision and thorough consultation before considering these medications. They recommend exploring alternative options and discussing the risks and benefits with a pediatrician before opting for medication.
