Fri Sep 20 10:31:57 UTC 2024: ## Australia’s Spy Agency Scrutinizes Palestinian Visa Holders Amid Gaza Crisis

**Canberra, Australia** – Following a surge in Palestinian visa applications, Australia’s spy agency, ASIO, has been conducting security checks on all Palestinian visa holders in the country, government documents reveal. This move comes amidst a heated political debate surrounding the vetting of refugees from Gaza, with the opposition Coalition calling for stricter measures.

The documents, tabled in the Senate on Friday, reveal that ASIO received a list of 2,601 Palestinian visa holders on March 16, 2024, for security assessments. The list included holders of all visa subclasses, allowing ASIO to prioritize those of “most concern.” While no adverse information has been identified to date, ASIO has revoked five visas based on additional information raising security concerns.

The Coalition has criticized the government’s response, arguing that the referral of visa holders to ASIO after visas were granted is problematic. Opposition leader Peter Dutton has repeatedly called for a ban on Gazan refugees until screening processes are revamped.

The government, however, insists that it is employing the same vetting processes used for refugees from other conflict zones. They argue that the Coalition’s rhetoric is divisive and counterproductive.

The documents also detail the rigorous multi-step security checks imposed on Palestinians attempting to leave Gaza and enter Australia. These checks include identity assessments, document verification, and biodata checks at various points, including the Rafah crossing and upon arrival in Australia.

Despite the Coalition’s claims, government documents confirm that the current screening processes do not include face-to-face interviews, which the Coalition has cited as a discrepancy compared to screening standards for Syrian refugees.

The situation highlights the complex challenges Australia faces in managing refugee applications during a conflict, while navigating intense political scrutiny and calls for stricter security measures.
