Wrexham AFC owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are reportedly considering a new venture, this time in the world of cricket. The Hollywood duo have reportedly made contact with Welsh Fire, a Cardiff-based cricket team, about potentially acquiring a stake in the club.
The Welsh Fire, a team competing in the Hundred, are currently majority owned by Glamorgan County Cricket Club. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board is seeking to raise £500 million through the sale of their 49% stake in the eight participating teams.
McElhenney and Reynolds, known for their success in reviving Wrexham AFC, have made their interest known. The pair have guided Wrexham from the National League to League One in just two seasons, drawing widespread attention and inspiring a popular documentary series.
While the Welsh Fire’s CEO, Dan Cherry, confirmed the contact and stated that all bids will be carefully considered, he also acknowledged the interest in what McElhenney and Reynolds have achieved at Wrexham. “There’s obvious interest in what Ryan Reynolds and the guys have done at Wrexham, which has been fantastic for football in north Wales,” he said.
The potential investment by McElhenney and Reynolds could bring a new wave of excitement to the Hundred and Cardiff cricket. It remains to be seen if the Hollywood duo will succeed in their pursuit of a cricket club, but their interest highlights the growing appeal of sports investment beyond traditional football.
