Thu Sep 19 05:20:31 UTC 2024: ## World Leaders Gather at UN Amidst Global Crises

**UNITED NATIONS (Reuters)** – Over 130 world leaders will convene at the United Nations next week for the annual high-level General Assembly, facing a bleak landscape of ongoing conflicts, worsening humanitarian crises, and climate change concerns. The gathering comes amid a heightened sense of urgency as the wars in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan continue to escalate, with little hope for immediate peace resolutions.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, along with Russia’s war in Ukraine, will dominate discussions. However, diplomats and analysts, including Richard Gowan of the International Crisis Group, are skeptical about the prospect of breakthroughs. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed similar concerns, highlighting the lack of peaceful solutions in both conflicts.

Adding to the tension is the recent escalation in Lebanon, with fears of a broader regional conflict after Hezbollah accused Israel of attacks. Guterres has urged all parties to avoid further escalation.

The Gaza conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on Israeli civilians in October 2023, has seen little progress in mediation efforts despite international pressure. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are both scheduled to address the Assembly on September 26, the mounting death toll in Gaza continues to underscore the urgency of finding a ceasefire.

Beyond the immediate crises, the looming US Presidential election adds another layer of uncertainty to the proceedings. Donald Trump, who previously criticized the UN and reduced US funding, is facing off against Vice President Kamala Harris. Experts believe Trump’s potential return to power will be a major point of discussion in private meetings.

This year’s General Assembly will also focus on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where famine has taken hold, and the ongoing struggles in Haiti and Afghanistan. Guterres, despite acknowledging the UN’s limitations in terms of power and resources, remains optimistic about the organization’s role in convening global leaders to address shared challenges.

The Assembly will also be overshadowed by ongoing tensions between Iran and the West. European powers are pushing for a revival of the Iran nuclear deal, with meetings scheduled between Iranian and European officials. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who will address the Assembly on Tuesday, is expected to focus on de-escalation and building confidence with the international community.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will deliver his third address to the General Assembly since the start of the Russian invasion, outlining a plan for a diplomatic end to the war. He is also set to present the plan to US President Joe Biden and both potential US successors. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed hope for progress on this front, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will address the Assembly on September 28.

The upcoming General Assembly promises to be a crucial platform for discussing global challenges, but with limited optimism for concrete solutions in the face of deep divisions and complex geopolitical realities.
