**Pyongyang, North Korea:** North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the successful launches of two types of tactical ballistic missiles, including one with a “super-large conventional warhead” and an “improved” cruise missile. These tests, according to state-run media, are a response to the “grave threat” posed to North Korea’s security by outside forces.
Kim, during the tests, emphasized the need to further strengthen both nuclear and conventional capabilities. He stated, “the need to continue to bolster up the nuclear force and have the strongest military technical capability and overwhelming offensive capability in the field of conventional weapons too.”
The Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 missiles, previously announced in July, were showcased with a 4.5-tonne warhead. Notably, North Korea typically tests missiles off its east coast, but these latest launches are said to have landed in the country’s mountainous northeastern region.
While North Korea has denied any arms trade with Russia, several South Korean military officials and analysts have suggested that the country may be seeking to export its weapons technology. This assertion is fueled by the recent strengthening of military ties between Pyongyang and Moscow. Kim met with President Vladimir Putin in Russia last year, and Putin visited Pyongyang in June, where they signed a mutual defence agreement.
These developments come amidst increased tensions on the Korean peninsula and raise concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region.
