**Washington, D.C.** – US intelligence agencies have accused Iran of hacking into former President Donald Trump’s campaign and sending stolen material to individuals associated with the Biden campaign, in an alleged attempt to influence the 2020 US election.
The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a joint statement on Wednesday, claiming Iranian hackers sent emails containing excerpts from Trump’s campaign materials to individuals in the Biden campaign between late June and early July.
The agencies say there is no evidence the recipients replied to the emails. They did not disclose the nature of the stolen material.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, called the allegations “further proof the Iranians are actively interfering in the election to help Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.” Leavitt demanded that the Biden campaign “come clean” on whether they used the allegedly hacked material to harm Trump’s candidacy.
A spokesperson for the Harris campaign denied any knowledge of material being sent directly to the campaign, claiming a few individuals were targeted with “spam or phishing attempts” on their personal emails.
Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in US elections, calling the allegations “fundamentally unfounded” and “wholly inadmissible.” They argue that Washington has a history of interfering in Iranian affairs, citing examples like the 1953 coup and the 2020 killing of General Qassem Soleimani.
This latest accusation comes after the US in August accused Iran of launching cyberattacks against both US presidential campaigns and targeting Americans with influence operations aimed at creating political discord.
The incident has raised further concerns about foreign interference in US elections and the vulnerability of political campaigns to cyberattacks.
