**Amsterdam, Netherlands -** Lightium, a Swiss startup developing cutting-edge photonic chips, has secured $7 million in seed funding to accelerate the performance and reduce the energy consumption of data centers.

Lightium’s technology is based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), a material that surpasses traditional silicon semiconductors in data transmission speeds. The company claims its chips can achieve rates of 1.6 or 3.2Tb/s, significantly exceeding the current maximum of 800Gb/s.

“Traditional semiconductor technologies are hitting their limits,” explained Dirk Englund, MIT professor and co-founder of Lightium. “Our TFLN-based chips offer a leap in transmission rates, enabling data centers to handle more data efficiently and reducing operational costs and energy consumption.”

Lightium is the first company to design and manufacture TFLN-based photonic chips at an industrial scale. This innovative technology could be a game-changer for data centers, which are responsible for a significant portion of global energy consumption and emissions.

“Digital sovereignty is becoming crucial,” added Englund. “Reliance on traditional semiconductor supply chains poses risks. Our TFLN chips offer a potential solution for Europe’s reliance on these chains.”

The funding will be used to commercialize Lightium’s production-grade TFLN Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) foundry services. The company expects to launch its services early in 2025, having already begun a closed beta pilot with strategic partners.

Beyond data centers, Lightium plans to expand its technology to other sectors like satellite communications and quantum computing.

The company’s success could have significant implications for the future of technology, potentially leading to a more sustainable and efficient digital world.
