Thu Sep 19 07:45:02 UTC 2024: ## Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman to Receive Pro-Israel Award Amidst Controversy
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman (D) will be awarded the “Defender of Israel” award by the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) on Wednesday. This comes as Fetterman has become a vocal supporter of Israel, aligning himself with the country during the recent conflict with Hamas. His stance has put him at odds with progressive members of his own party who have been critical of Israel’s military response.
The ZOA, known for its staunch support of Israel, has been facing internal turmoil for years. Its president, Morton Klein, has been accused of financial misconduct, poor leadership, and making racist and sexist remarks. Notably, Klein has publicly supported former President Donald Trump, who received a different award from the ZOA in 2022.
While Fetterman’s acceptance of the award is being seen as a recognition of his unwavering support for Israel, it has also drawn criticism due to the ZOA’s controversial history and leadership.
Fetterman, who visited Israel in June and met with President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been praised by Israeli officials for his strong advocacy. His recent pro-Israel stance is a stark contrast to the growing anti-Israel sentiment within the Democratic party, exemplified by Governor Josh Shapiro’s public denouncement of Netanyahu.
Fetterman, who is not Jewish, received a separate honor in May at Yeshiva University’s commencement ceremony, highlighting his commitment to the Israel-US relationship.
The award ceremony comes at a time when tensions between the US and Israel are high following the recent conflict. While Fetterman’s support for Israel has been lauded by the ZOA, it remains to be seen how his stance will be received by his constituents and fellow Democrats.
