Thu Sep 19 07:45:59 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Tests New Tactical Ballistic Missiles and Upgraded Cruise Missiles

**SEOUL, South Korea** – North Korea conducted a series of missile tests on Wednesday, showcasing new tactical ballistic missiles with super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles. The tests, overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, were described by state media as necessary to counter the “grave threat” posed by external forces.

The tests come on the heels of North Korea’s announcement last week of a new uranium enrichment facility. This is the second round of missile launches in a week, following the firing of multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, reported by the South Korean military.

Kim Jong Un emphasized the need for a stronger conventional military and nuclear capability, stating, “the need to continue to bolster up the nuclear force and have the strongest military technical capability and overwhelming offensive capability in the field of conventional weapons too.”

The new Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 tactical ballistic missile was tested with a 4.5-ton warhead, according to KCNA. This missile, still under development, is considered a potential export item for Russia, who may be interested in its performance and reliability. Experts note that while both Moscow and Pyongyang deny any illicit arms trade, there have been signs that some of the missiles used by Russia in the Ukraine war could be of North Korean origin.

The tests also included an upgraded strategic cruise missile designed for combat use.

North Korea has previously condemned joint military exercises conducted by the South Korean and U.S. militaries, claiming they are preparations for an attack on the Korean Peninsula. The allies maintain that the drills are purely defensive and intended to maintain readiness against any North Korean aggression.
