**Helsinki, Finland** – To mark its 20th anniversary, Finnish Design Shop has unveiled a collection of open-ended wooden toys dubbed “Pelata,” meaning “play” in Finnish. The collection, launched during Helsinki Design Week, features unique reinterpretations of classic games and musical instruments, all crafted with locally sourced woods like birch and ash.
The collection, created in collaboration with various Nordic designers, aims to encourage interactive play across all age groups. Highlights include:
* **Prikka**, a backgammon board that doubles as a tray, designed by Stockholm studio TAF.
* **Sokkelo**, a sculptural labyrinth crafted from ash by Norwegian studio Anderssen & Voll.
* **Krocc**, a chunky percussion instrument resembling a playful crocodile, and **Bic-Bac-Boc**, another musical instrument shaped like a bloated elephant, both also by Anderssen & Voll.
* **Metsäpallo**, a boules-style lawn game featuring toadstool-shaped pieces, inspired by Finland’s deep connection to its forests, designed by Helsinki-based Studio Tolvanen.
* **Huippa**, a collapsible version of a traditional ring toss, crafted from birch with jute rope rings, by fellow Helsinki studio Kaksikko.
“Pelata toys are slayers of awkward silences,” says Finnish Design Shop CEO Teemu Kiiski, emphasizing their potential to spark conversation and create shared experiences. Kiiski also highlights the collection’s celebration of Nordic values: craftsmanship and the use of sustainable, locally sourced materials.
“It was quite natural to celebrate our 20th anniversary with a collection of games, instruments, and playthings,” explains Kiiski. “They all create happiness and call people to come together. It aligns so well with our mission to fill the world with Nordic happiness.”
The Pelata collection is available at Finnish Design Shop’s website and select retailers.
