Thu Sep 19 07:27:40 UTC 2024: ## Norway Delivers on Moldova Support Package, Focusing on Energy, Education, and Democracy
**Oslo, Norway – 18 September 2024** – Norway has finalized the distribution of its promised NOK 350 million support package to Moldova, following the state visit of Moldovan President Maja Sandu earlier this year. The funding will primarily focus on key areas like energy efficiency, education, electoral processes, and combating disinformation.
“The funding from Norway is targeted towards measures that have a rapid effect and improve the situation for Moldova’s vulnerable population,” stated State Secretary Eivind Vad Petersson. “Norway is also pleased to support democratic processes and bolster Moldova’s ability to withstand attempts to undermine national stability.”
A significant portion of the support, approximately NOK 170 million, will be dedicated to bolstering energy efficiency in Moldova. This includes funding for home energy upgrades, replacing inefficient appliances, and establishing a loan scheme for similar energy-saving measures. Additionally, Norway will provide NOK 30 million to support energy-efficient solutions in Moldova’s municipal sector, focusing on district heating, renewable energy, and green technology in schools and hospitals.
The education sector will also receive a substantial boost, with NOK 65 million allocated to renovate five school buildings, improve teacher training, and enhance the quality of education overall. This support comes in response to the OECD’s PISA report highlighting the need for educational improvements in Moldova.
To support democratic processes in Moldova, Norway will provide NOK 18 million to strengthen electoral institutions and combat cyber and information threats. The funding will be used to improve oversight of political financing, strengthen political parties and election campaigns, and enhance civic engagement.
Furthermore, Norway is providing close to NOK 10 million to support efforts to combat disinformation and promote neutral, factual information in Moldova, which faces significant propaganda campaigns from Russia. Finally, approximately NOK 12 million will be allocated towards integrating gender perspectives into local climate adaptation plans and promoting climate-smart solutions for sustainable development.
The remaining portion of the support package is currently under consideration and will be announced at a later date.
