Thu Sep 19 07:27:34 UTC 2024: ## Kashmir Votes in First Local Elections Since 2019 Autonomy Revocation
**SRINAGAR, INDIA -** Kashmiris went to the polls on Wednesday for the first time in ten years, casting ballots in the first phase of local elections. The vote comes amidst heightened security and marks a significant moment for the disputed Himalayan region, following the Indian government’s 2019 decision to revoke its special status.
Over 8.7 million registered voters are expected to participate in the three-phased elections, choosing representatives for the 90-seat legislature. While the elections offer a glimmer of hope for local representation, key decisions, including security and the appointment of the governor, will remain in the hands of New Delhi.
“We have been waiting for this for the last 10 years because there are a lot of problems here in terms of healthcare, education and development,” said Shahnawat, a local resident. “We will now be able to choose a good representative.”
Despite the opportunity for local participation, concerns remain over the restrictions on civil liberties imposed after 2019. Unemployment, currently at 18.3%, more than double the national average, is a major concern for many.
“My biggest concern is unemployment,” said Madiha, a jobless graduate. “The cost of living has reached the sky.”
The elections have also been met with criticism from Pakistan, who claims the revocation of Kashmir’s special status was illegal. Islamabad has accused India of supporting pro-independence fighters and condemned the heavy military presence in the region.
The results of the elections are expected to be released on October 8th. While the vote offers a degree of local control, the future of Kashmir remains shrouded in uncertainty.
