**Chennai, India:** India continued their dominance on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, thanks to another stellar performance by veteran all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The pair, who put on a 195-run partnership for the seventh wicket on Day 1, extended their dominance into the second day, leaving Bangladesh struggling to contain the scoring rate.
Ashwin, who reached his sixth Test century on Thursday, finished the day on 113, while Jadeja fell for 86. The duo’s relentless partnership put India in a commanding position, with the hosts reaching 339/6 at stumps, leading by 350 runs.
Bangladesh had gotten off to a good start on the first day, bowling out India’s top order cheaply. However, the late surge by Ashwin and Jadeja turned the tide, leaving Bangladesh with a mountain to climb.
The second day began with Bangladesh’s pace attack desperately seeking an early breakthrough. Taskin Ahmed delivered, removing Jadeja in the third over of the day. However, Ashwin continued to score freely, reaching his century in just 108 balls.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack looked toothless in the face of Ashwin and Jadeja’s aggression, and the pair were able to add another 24 runs to their partnership before Ashwin was finally dismissed by Taskin.
Bangladesh will now need a monumental effort to salvage anything from the match. The team faces a daunting target to avoid the follow-on, and the pitch, which is expected to offer more turn as the match progresses, is likely to be even more difficult for their batters.
The second day also saw a poor start from Bangladesh’s batting line-up. They lost three wickets in the first 10 overs, leaving them reeling at 26/3.
The remaining three days of the match are set to be crucial, with India looking to secure a dominant victory.
