**Corby, Northamptonshire -** A horrific acid attack targeting vehicles near a children’s football practice in Corby has left five people needing emergency treatment. The incident, which occurred at around 6:30 PM on Wednesday, saw a group of young people on mopeds throw a substance over seven parked cars.
Witnesses reported seeing up to four motorbikes and mopeds speeding across fields before one stopped, and its occupants threw the corrosive liquid. Children were arriving for football training with Hellenic Fisher FC when the attack happened, according to the Northamptonshire Telegraph.
Armed police and paramedics responded to the scene on Burghley Drive, treating the five individuals affected. While the injuries were not serious, the victims required immediate medical attention. Several bystanders attempted to wash off the substance before realizing its acidic nature. Police believe the substance used was either a solvent or hydrochloric acid, though further testing is planned to confirm this.
Sergeant Keely Cox of Corby Police stated that “We are using all our resources this evening to catch the perpetrators,” emphasizing that the attack is not believed to be targeted. She added that the incident underscores the importance of Operation Pacify, which aims to prevent such serious events.
The attack follows a concerning trend in acid attacks across the UK, with statistics showing a 69% increase nationwide and a 45% increase in London in the year to 2022. The incident has shaken the community and highlights the urgent need to address this rising problem.
