**Eran, Madhya Pradesh** – The ancient town of Eran, located in Madhya Pradesh, is proving to be a treasure trove of historical artifacts and information about the Gupta Empire. The site, mentioned in ancient Hindu and Buddhist texts as Erakanya or Erakaina, boasts a rich history dating back centuries.
Recent excavations have unearthed numerous ancient coins, hinting at the town’s role as a mint during ancient times. Eran also houses 5th and 6th-century temples and monuments from the Gupta era, including a colossal statue of Varaha, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, standing at a towering 10 feet.
The inscriptions found on the Varaha statue and other stones in Eran have become invaluable tools for historians, providing crucial insights into the chronology of the Gupta Empire. One notable inscription, the Inscription of Bhanugupta, is said to hold the first epigraphical evidence of the Sati practice.
The town’s name, according to the Madhya Pradesh government website, is derived from the abundance of “ERAKA,” a type of grass known for its medicinal properties. Eran also boasts a fort attributed to the Dangis and numerous Vishnu temples, or their remains.
Excavations conducted by the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sagar have uncovered artifacts similar to those found at Maheshwar and Tripuri, suggesting that Eran might have been the northernmost limit of Madhya Pradesh’s Chalcolithic culture.
The Varaha statue, intricately carved from stone, depicts the Goddess Earth on its right tusk, making it a powerful symbol of the ancient era. It is believed that the statue once resided within a temple dedicated to Varaha, further enhancing the historical significance of the site.
