Thu Sep 19 07:27:57 UTC 2024: ## B-21 Raider: New Stealth Bomber Takes Flight, Set to Become Backbone of Air Force

**NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (AFNS)** – The Department of the Air Force is forging ahead with the B-21 Raider, its newest stealth bomber, as it aims to replace the aging B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers. This ambitious program, discussed at the Air and Space Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference on Sept. 18, is designed to become the cornerstone of the Air Force’s flexible global strike capability.

“The B-21 will be the air leg of the nuclear triad,” stated Gen. Thomas Bussiere, Air Force Global Strike Command commander, highlighting its critical role in deterring conflict.

This long-range, highly survivable bomber is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions, making it a formidable force in the modern combat landscape.

The program has made significant progress in recent months, with the B-21 completing its static test, validating the structural integrity of the aircraft. The aircraft is currently undergoing fatigue testing, and the program is on track for two flight test flights per week, according to Thomas Jones, Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector president.

“When we started this journey, we made a vow that we were going to design this system to be a daily flyer,” Jones said. “It’s been a phenomenal year of progress.”

The Air Force is also actively preparing Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, for the B-21’s arrival, ensuring its squadrons are ready to operate the new aircraft. Whiteman AFB, Missouri, and Dyess AFB, Texas, have also been selected as basing locations for the B-21, further bolstering its strategic impact.

“Nobody on the planet can do what we’re doing right now,” stated Bussiere, emphasizing the B-21’s uniqueness and the advanced technological prowess it represents.

The B-21 program aims to produce at least 100 aircraft, and its flexibility and adaptability will be critical in meeting the ever-changing challenges of a global landscape.

“Agility and flexibility – they can’t just be buzzwords,” said William Bailey, Department of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office director. “These are the kind of things that you need to be able to demonstrate over time… Why? Because it’s going to be changing on you.”

The B-21 Raider is not simply a replacement for aging aircraft but a powerful symbol of American innovation and a vital component in ensuring continued strategic dominance in the years to come.
