**Calgary, AB** – The future of the much-anticipated Green Line LRT project hangs in the balance after the Alberta government abruptly withdrew funding, effectively killing the project as it was envisioned. This move, spearheaded by Premier Danielle Smith, has ignited a bitter dispute between the city and province, leaving a $1.3 billion hole in Calgary’s budget and casting uncertainty over the project’s future.
The city council, in a 10-5 vote, decided to cease further development of the Green Line due to the province’s withdrawal of support. Mayor Jyoti Gondek declared the project “dead” and lamented the loss of funding that had already been sunk into the project.
The heart of the dispute lies in the downtown tunnel section of the Green Line. While the city envisioned a tunnel for efficient transit, the provincial government argues it is too expensive, opting for a less costly above-ground route that prioritizes reaching suburban commuters.
Premier Smith asserts that the project, as originally planned, would be exorbitantly costly, exceeding $20 billion. She has proposed a revised plan focusing on extending the line to the southeast, bypassing the downtown tunnel.
This has raised concerns among city officials and residents, who view the downtown section as crucial for the project’s success. Critics argue that the province’s proposed alternative, which would serve fewer Calgarians, is a misguided approach.
The province has commissioned a study on an alternative route, further delaying the project. This study, however, has raised eyebrows as the firm contracted for it, AECOM, was the runner-up bidder for the original Green Line development.
The escalating dispute between Calgary and the province raises questions about the project’s future. With no clear consensus on the project’s direction, the Green Line remains in limbo, leaving its fate uncertain and casting a shadow over Calgary’s transportation future.
