**Wollongong, NSW** – Sixteen-year-old track and field athlete, Nicholas McGill, has been crowned the Illawarra Academy of Sport’s Athlete of the Year. The young steeplechase champion, who holds an Oceania record, has had a stellar year on the track.
McGill’s accomplishments include victories at state and national levels, and a first-place finish in the under 18s 2000m Steeplechase at the Oceania Athletics Championships. His performance in the Oceania Championships saw him set a new championships record and dominate the field by three seconds.
McGill’s dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. He was also awarded the academy’s BlueScope WIN Future Stars athlete of the year title, and received the prestigious DRB Group Tobin Family Athlete of the Year Award, which comes with a $10,000 prize.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, McGill expressed his gratitude to the IAS, his coach, and his parents for their unwavering support. He also highlighted the academy’s role in helping him become a stronger and more well-rounded athlete.
“This year has probably been one of my better seasons in my track career,” he said. “The IAS has helped me become stronger as an athlete and smarter in the way I go about my diet and recovery. My next big goal is to represent Australia at the World Under 20 Championships in a few years’ time.”
Meanwhile, snowboard cross athlete Marci Davis-Cook was awarded the DRB Group Athlete Leadership Award for her impressive performance on and off the snowfields. Davis-Cook was the youngest female to represent Australia at the Snowboard Cross Junior World Championships in Georgia. Her selection came after a successful Europa Cup campaign, which she balanced with her school studies.
Davis-Cook’s commitment to the academy extends beyond her own athletic pursuits. She has actively participated in the program, delivering keynote speeches at various events and serving as a member of the Future Stars program.
The awards ceremony also saw Ashlee Scofield named Coach of the Year and other athletes recognized for their achievements in their respective fields. The event highlights the dedication and talent of young athletes in the Illawarra region and the continued success of the Illawarra Academy of Sport in fostering their growth.
