Wed Sep 18 00:47:00 UTC 2024: ## Wisconsin Medicaid Enrollment Drops After Pandemic Pause

**MADISON, WI** – Wisconsin’s Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus enrollment has fallen to 1.3 million, down from a pandemic peak of nearly 1.7 million, according to recent figures released by the state’s Department of Health Services.

The decline follows the end of a federal pause on Medicaid eligibility checks, which was implemented in March 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pause, which lasted until April 2023, prevented individuals from being removed from the program even if they no longer met eligibility requirements.

A yearlong “unwinding” process, which began in April, is now underway to review and verify the eligibility of enrolled individuals. This process is expected to result in a continued decrease in enrollment numbers as some individuals are found to no longer qualify for the program.
