**London, UK** – A woman has revealed how her quest for a “better” version of herself led to a costly obsession with vitamins and supplements, ultimately costing her over £2,800 a year and delivering little to no noticeable benefits.
Sadie Nicholas, a perimenopausal woman struggling with sleep issues, started with a single jar of magnesium capsules three years ago. Soon, she was bombarded with targeted advertising for supplements promising everything from thicker hair to glowing skin. “I was spiralling down a vitamin and supplement rabbit hole,” Nicholas confessed.
Over time, her supplement collection grew to include a dizzying array of vitamins, minerals, and herbs, including B12, detox and de-bloating pills, hair and energy boosters, ashwagandha, collagen, probiotics, and biotin.
However, Nicholas realized she wasn’t experiencing any significant improvements. “By the start of this year, I was on the cusp of rattling every time I moved, such was the quantity of daily capsules I consumed,” she said.
Further research revealed that most medical experts agree that the majority of supplements are unproven. Dr. Chris Van Tulleken, a TV doctor, stated in a recent radio interview that “there is no supplement or extract of any food that brings any health benefit in a healthy person with the possible exception of vitamin D, or B12 in a vegan.”
Nicholas, who already maintains a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep hygiene, has decided to stop purchasing most supplements. “I’ve already stopped taking some of them – and, truthfully, I can’t tell the difference,” she admitted.
She plans to continue with Vitamin D, which is the only supplement the UK government recommends for everyone.
Nicholas’ story serves as a cautionary tale for those tempted by the allure of supplements. While some may benefit from specific supplements under the guidance of a healthcare professional, the vast majority are unlikely to provide noticeable results. In the case of Nicholas, she learned a valuable lesson: sometimes, the most effective way to improve your wellbeing is by focusing on a healthy lifestyle rather than relying on expensive and unproven products.
