Thu Sep 19 00:47:00 UTC 2024: ## Anderson’s Freshman Golf Team Finds Inspiration in Lapel Match

**ANDERSON, IN -** Anderson’s girls golf team, making its return to varsity competition after a five-year hiatus, faced a formidable opponent in their regular-season finale: the reigning Madison County champion, Lapel Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs, led by medalist Annabelle Marshall with a score of 39, ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 175-209. While the Indians fell short, their freshman team, composed entirely of first-year varsity players, showed impressive potential.

Anderson’s Addison Goen, the team’s top player, impressed with a personal-best round of 44, including a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. Goen, who was paired with Marshall and Jane Armington, both regional qualifiers from the previous year, showed resilience and a strong work ethic.

“I saw Jane and Annabelle a couple times, they didn’t hit a great shot, but they had a good hole because they saved it with an up-and-down,” Goen remarked. “That’s something that I personally want to get better at.”

Goen, who earned All-North Central Conference honors this season, has shown remarkable improvement despite facing challenges earlier in the summer. “I knew I could make all-conference, and I made it,” she said. “I was really happy. That was really big. Now, starting as a freshman, I can make all-conference all four years.”

The team’s focus is on building a solid foundation for the future, aiming to eventually reach the level of teams like Lapel. “Especially (important) for Addison, I think, to see that she’s not too far behind the two best in the county,” Anderson coach Chuck Graybiel said.

Despite the loss, Anderson’s young team demonstrated their determination and potential, drawing praise from Lapel coach Dylan Crosley. “He’s doing a great job,” Crosley said of Graybiel. “The girls are pretty good, and they’re all freshmen, so they can only go up from there. Chuck’s doing a really good job. I’m proud of him.”

As the team prepares for the sectional tournament in Noblesville, their sights are set on the long-term goal of reestablishing Anderson’s golf program as a force to be reckoned with.
