Wed Sep 18 17:56:00 UTC 2024: ## House Approves $3 Billion to Avert VA Benefit Delays

**Washington, D.C.** – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Veterans Benefits Continuity and Accountability Supplemental Appropriations Act, providing $3 billion to cover a budget shortfall in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This move aims to prevent delays in benefit payments to over 500,000 veterans nationwide.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Rep. Mike Garcia of California, received bipartisan support and passed with a voice vote. It now heads to the Senate, which has until Friday to act before potential delays in veteran benefits begin.

While the bill provides a temporary solution for the current fiscal year, it also emphasizes the need for greater transparency and accountability in the VA’s budgeting and spending practices.

Republican Rep. Greg Murphy, a North Carolina lawmaker who supported the bill, expressed concerns about the VA’s financial management, citing instances of unjustified bonuses and delayed responses to sexual harassment claims. “Our veterans deserve to be treated with dignity and receive the care they are entitled to,” he said.

Democratic Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina also supported the bill, stating, “We must care for our disabled veterans.”

The VA has been grappling with a growing financial burden, facing increasing demands for services and a complex administrative system. The bill’s passage highlights the pressing need for a long-term solution to ensure the VA can effectively meet the needs of the nation’s veterans.
