**Washington, D.C.** – The FBI has successfully disrupted a second major Chinese hacking group, dubbed “Flax Typhoon,” according to FBI Director Christopher Wray. This follows the identification of another group, “Volt Typhoon,” last year, which has been actively targeting critical US infrastructure.
Speaking at a cybersecurity conference, Wray revealed that Flax Typhoon was operated by a Chinese company called Integrity Technology Group, masquerading as a legitimate IT firm. In reality, the company was “collecting intelligence and performing reconnaissance for Chinese government security agencies,” according to Wray.
The disruption of Flax Typhoon resulted in the recovery of thousands of compromised devices from the group’s control. While officials have not provided specifics regarding the targets or methods used by Flax Typhoon, the focus on critical infrastructure mirrors the activities of Volt Typhoon.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet responded to requests for comment on the allegations.
This latest development underscores the increasing concern surrounding Chinese cyber activity targeting US infrastructure. While China has denied involvement in Volt Typhoon, claiming it is a ransomware gang, the US maintains its assessment that both groups are backed by the Chinese government.
The disruption of these hacking groups highlights the ongoing struggle to protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats and the need for international cooperation to combat these activities.
