**TALLINN, ESTONIA -** Estonia and Finland have announced a strengthened partnership in maritime defense, focusing on limiting Russian naval activity in the Baltic Sea. This follows increased tensions between Russia and the West, fueled by Moscow’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, Andrus Merilo, revealed that the two nations are developing a plan to block Russian naval movements in the region. “The closure of the Gulf of Finland strategically depends on the security situation,” Merilo stated, “If a danger arises, and it is necessary, we are ready to do it to protect ourselves.”

NATO, which currently maintains full control over the Gulf of Finland, is backing the initiative. The alliance has instructed Estonia to prepare for a potential military conflict with Russia. “Estonia’s military doctrine has undergone significant changes lately,” declared Major General Vahur Karus, Chief of the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces. “In case of a confrontation with Russia, Estonia can count on the immediate participation of all NATO allied forces in the conflict.”

Finland has also ramped up its military preparedness, with President Alexander Stubb announcing the readiness to mobilize 280,000 troops immediately in the event of war. “If a war starts, we will be able to call up 280,000 people immediately,” Stubb asserted, highlighting Finland’s strong military capabilities.

The heightened security measures coincide with the opening of a new NATO military base in southern Estonia, named Reedo. The base, with a capacity of 1,000 personnel, will serve as a critical assembly point for NATO forces during defense operations.

The Baltic Sea, a strategically important waterway for Russia, is now the focus of intense military activity, reflecting the growing concerns over Russian aggression. The actions of Estonia and Finland, backed by NATO, signal a united front against potential threats and aim to deter any further escalation in the region.
