In a recent CNN interview, authors of the book “Lucky Loser”, Russ Buettner and Susanna Craig, discussed Donald Trump’s past media manipulation and reality show behavior. They revealed that Trump used a fake name, “John Barron”, to plant stories about his wealth and affairs in the media for years.
“He would pretend to be this guy, John Barron,” explained CNN anchor Erin Burnett, “and do it when he was talking about affairs or how rich he was. Because he wanted people to think he was richer than he was, to get on the Forbes list and all of these things.”
The authors also revealed that Trump’s “The Apprentice” reality show was heavily edited to make the show more entertaining. They cited the example of contestant David Gould, who producers believed would win, but was fired by Trump in the first episode.
“Producers were like, ‘Oh my God, what do we do with this now?'” Buettner said. “But then they had this other moment because it was entertainment, not reality. ‘Oh my gosh, this is really great because this is so unpredictable.'”
The authors further explained that Trump’s impulsive decision to fire Gould in the first episode was a sign of his poor business decisions, which, ironically, made the show more compelling. They alleged that scenes were re-edited to make Gould appear worse than he actually was.
The interview concluded with Craig revealing that they traced the origin of the name “John Barron” to classified ads placed by Trump in New York newspapers, where he used it as a pseudonym to hire workers.
The authors’ revelations shed new light on Trump’s past media manipulation and suggest that his reality show success was, in part, manufactured through selective editing and fabricated persona.
