Wed Sep 18 03:39:51 UTC 2024: ## TSA Holds Annual Olympics to Enhance Security Skills

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently hosted its fourth annual Olympics, marking the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. The event, designed to promote best practices and healthy competition, saw 54 of the agency’s top Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) compete in a series of challenges designed to test their threat detection abilities.

TSOs from across the country participated in the competition, showcasing their skills in pat-down searches, handbag inspections, wheelchair passenger screening, and checked baggage searches. They were also assessed on their ability to interpret X-ray images for potential threats. Team Washington emerged victorious, securing the gold medal, followed by Team Nevada in second place and Team Oklahoma taking home the bronze.

TSA Deputy Administrator Holly Canevari emphasized that the Olympics are not just about competition, but also about “celebrating the vital skills that lie at the heart of our mission – threat detection, security and service excellence.”

Despite ongoing criticism regarding the TSA’s ability to detect threats, the agency has seen a significant increase in the number of firearms confiscated at airport security checkpoints. In 2023, the TSA intercepted a record 6,737 firearms, the vast majority of which were loaded. Atlanta led the way with the most intercepted firearms at 451, followed by Dallas Fort Worth (373), Houston (311), Phoenix (235), and Nashville (188).
