**Ulsan, South Korea** – A research team at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has made a significant breakthrough in transparent solar cell technology, paving the way for widespread adoption of this innovative energy source. The team has developed a modularization approach that allows for the seamless integration of individual transparent solar cells into larger, practical modules, addressing a key obstacle in scaling the technology for real-world applications.
This breakthrough utilizes crystalline silicon (c-Si), the most common and efficient photovoltaic material, in a novel modular design. The team’s “Seamless Modularization” technology eliminates the gaps between solar cells, eliminating the need for metal wires and preserving the aesthetically pleasing glass-like appearance.
In a practical demonstration, the researchers successfully charged a smartphone using natural sunlight, proving that a mobile device’s screen can act as an energy source. The researchers achieved a peak power conversion efficiency of 15.8 percent with an average visible transmittance of 20 percent in their 16 cm² transparent solar cell module.
