Wed Sep 18 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Galway Star Whelan Backs Pre-Season Competition Scrap for Player Welfare
**Belfast, Northern Ireland:** Galway captain Conor Whelan has thrown his weight behind the controversial decision to scrap pre-season competitions in 2025, arguing that the move will prioritize player welfare and give third-level championships the recognition they deserve.
The Central Council’s decision has sparked debate, but Whelan believes the removal of pre-season competitions will allow college players to focus on their studies and reduce the risk of overload injuries. He highlighted the demanding schedule faced by third-level students, often juggling intense training regimes, competitive games, and demanding academic commitments.
“My PhD research focuses on elite GAA student athletes, and it highlights the conflict between their sporting and academic commitments,” Whelan explained. “These competitions are held during crucial exam periods, putting immense pressure on players.”
Whelan further emphasized that removing the pre-season competitions would give greater prominence to the Fitzgibbon, Sigerson, Ashbourne, and O’Connor Cups, providing a platform for players to showcase their talent without the added pressure of county commitments. He also noted the increased risk of injuries from the heavy game schedule.
“When you’re competing between finances coming into each province against welfare, the welfare of the players has to be No 1,” Whelan stressed.
The Galway star, a two-time All-Star, believes the move will ultimately benefit the players, giving them a better chance to excel both academically and athletically. “Give them the space to be able to compete for their college and on the back of that, they’ll get opportunities in the league,” Whelan concluded.
