The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a major labor union representing truckers and UPS drivers, has revealed that its membership favors former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. While the union announced it would not formally endorse either candidate, the internal polling results indicate a significant shift from the organization’s historical support of Democratic presidential candidates.
The poll, conducted by the Teamsters union, found that 58% of its 1.3 million members support Trump, compared to 31% who back Harris. This preference for Trump, despite the union’s refusal to formally endorse him, could be seen as a significant political victory for the former president.
Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, who has previously met with both Harris and Trump, emphasized that the union’s decision to withhold an endorsement stems from neither candidate making concrete commitments to address issues critical to the union’s membership.
O’Brien explained that the union is diverse in its political affiliations and that it represents not just Democrats, but also Republicans and Independents. He stressed that the union’s focus is on securing the best possible outcomes for its members, regardless of political affiliation.
The Teamsters’ support for Trump is not entirely unexpected. The union’s membership, primarily comprised of working-class men and women with limited education, often aligns with the demographic that tends to support Trump.
This development marks a notable break from the Teamsters’ recent history. The union had previously endorsed every Democratic presidential candidate from 2000 to 2020, while only abstaining from endorsement in 1996. Notably, they had endorsed Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush in the past.
The Trump campaign responded to the poll results with a statement, highlighting the potential benefits of Trump’s agenda for working-class Americans. Meanwhile, the Harris campaign has not yet responded to the poll’s findings.
The news of the Teamsters’ internal polling results has generated considerable discussion about the union’s shifting political landscape and its potential implications for the upcoming election. The decision to withhold an endorsement while revealing the membership’s preference for Trump adds another layer of complexity to the already dynamic political landscape.
