**PENN LAIRD** – Cub Run Elementary School students will be starting the new school year with a helping hand from Bob Wade Subaru. The Harrisonburg dealership donated enough school supplies to equip 25 classrooms, benefiting nearly every student at the county’s largest elementary school.
The generous donation was made possible through Subaru of America’s partnership with Adopt a Classroom, a national nonprofit that connects businesses with schools in need. This year, Bob Wade Subaru provided supplies like notebooks, pencils, markers, sanitizer, and headphones for students using their school-provided devices.
“It’s something that you really can’t put a word to the feeling you get from giving to the community and them responding,” said Kevin Knott, sales representative at Bob Wade Subaru.
The dealership also provided backpacks full of supplies for individual students in need, and some teachers received monetary donations of up to $2,000.
Cub Run Elementary, which has over 40% of students in financial need, has been receiving donations from Bob Wade Subaru for several years. This year’s donation was particularly meaningful, as teachers often have to spend their own money to purchase necessary school supplies.
“Donations are huge for us because so many teachers use money from their own pockets,” said April Soltis, gifted education teacher at Cub Run.
Students celebrated the donation with a special program featuring songs, handmade quilt squares, and heartfelt thank yous to the dealership.
“I’m really happy that we got those, because the car dealership didn’t have to give us them,” said Ayana Johnson, a fifth-grader at Cub Run. “They could have given them to any other place, facility, or random school, but they chose our school.”
The school plans to sew the students’ quilt squares together into a quilt for Knott, which will be displayed at the dealership alongside handmade cards from previous years. This gesture highlights the positive impact of the dealership’s support on the students and the school community.
