**Wellington, New Zealand:** Sri Lanka’s hopes of a series-clinching victory were dealt a blow in the second Test against New Zealand, as the visitors lost wickets in quick succession after a magnificent century from Kamindu Mendis.

Mendis, who reached his hundred off 172 balls, fell for 114, becoming the first Sri Lankan batter to score a century in this series. He had put on a crucial 159-run partnership with Kusal Mendis (50), who was also dismissed after reaching his half-century.

The Kiwis were on the back foot for much of the day, with Ajaz Patel picking up two crucial wickets. The left-arm spinner dismissed Ramesh Mendis (14) and Prabath Jayasuriya (0) to break the back of Sri Lanka’s lower order.

William O’Rourke also played a significant role, claiming three wickets, including those of Lahiru Kumara (2) and a crucial lbw dismissal of Ramesh Mendis.

Glenn Phillips was the hero for New Zealand, taking a vital catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis, ending his brilliant innings.
