Thu Sep 19 07:09:11 UTC 2024: ## Mendis Rescues Sri Lanka on Day 1 of First Test Against New Zealand
**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Kamindu Mendis starred with a magnificent century on Wednesday, rescuing Sri Lanka from a precarious position to reach 302-7 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test against New Zealand. The left-handed batsman, playing at No. 5 for the first time, struck his fourth Test century in just his seventh match, showcasing his immense talent and potential.
Mendis, who had been batting at No. 7 previously, was promoted up the order to provide stability to the Sri Lankan innings. He anchored a crucial 103-run partnership with Kusal Mendis (50) for the sixth wicket, helping Sri Lanka fight back after they were reduced to 178-5.
The New Zealand bowlers, led by William O’Rourke’s 3-54, put in a spirited effort, but Mendis remained unfazed, reaching his century with a boundary off Rachin Ravindra. However, he was eventually dismissed by Ajaz Patel with five minutes remaining before stumps.
Earlier, Sri Lanka lost both their openers, Pathum Nissanka (27) and Dimuth Karunaratne (2) early in the day. O’Rourke also struck Angelo Mathews on his right index finger, forcing the batter to retire.
The weather played a part on Day 1, with intermittent rain forcing multiple interruptions. Despite the challenges, the hosts managed to put up a respectable score, setting up a fascinating contest for the remaining days.
Sri Lanka will be hoping to build on Mendis’s heroics and capitalize on the momentum on Day 2, while New Zealand will be aiming to bounce back and take control of the match.
