Thu Sep 19 11:09:06 UTC 2024: ## Mendis’ Century Rescues Sri Lanka on Day 1 of First Test Against New Zealand

**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Kamindu Mendis struck a brilliant century on Wednesday, rescuing Sri Lanka from a precarious position on Day 1 of the first test against New Zealand. The hosts reached 302-7 at stumps, with Mendis finishing unbeaten on 114.

Mendis, promoted to number five in the batting order, batted with composure and determination, scoring his fourth test century in just his seventh match. He shared a crucial 103-run partnership with Kusal Mendis (50) for the sixth wicket, helping Sri Lanka recover from 178-5.

New Zealand had early success, with William O’Rourke picking up three wickets, including the dismissals of both Sri Lankan openers. However, Mendis’s century proved decisive, and he is now on course to become the fastest Sri Lankan to reach 1,000 test runs.

“After my debut, I had to sit out for two years,” said Mendis. “It was a good learning experience, and the support I received from the High Performance Center helped me improve my game.”

New Zealand took the second new ball but it was Ajaz Patel who dismissed Mendis just five minutes before stumps.

The first test continues on Thursday, with New Zealand hoping to capitalize on their early advantage and restrict Sri Lanka’s lead.
