**GALLE, SRI LANKA** – New Zealand seized control on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb on Day 3.

Sri Lanka, after being bowled out for 305 in their first innings, found themselves trailing by 50 runs at stumps. New Zealand, despite losing four wickets, are well-placed to declare on Day 3 and set a challenging target for Sri Lanka.

The day began with Sri Lanka’s first innings being brought to an end by a stellar bowling performance from William O’Rourke who took five wickets. Kamindu Mendis top-scored for Sri Lanka with a patient 114 runs, while Kusal Mendis added 50 runs.

New Zealand’s chase started with a confident display of batting from Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, who scored 41 and 18 runs respectively at the close of play. Mitchell, in particular, showed his class, scoring boundaries with effortless ease, including a massive six over deep mid-wicket.
