Thu Sep 19 15:10:23 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Fight Back in Galle, Latham and Williamson Lead Strong Response

**Galle, Sri Lanka:** New Zealand mounted a strong response to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 305 on a rain-affected second day of the first Test in Galle. Tom Latham’s 70 and Kane Williamson’s masterful 55 in challenging conditions were the highlights of the New Zealand innings, taking them to 255 for 4 at stumps.

The visitors were initially put on the back foot, with rain washing out most of the first session after Sri Lanka reached 300 thanks to Kamindu Mendis’ impressive 114. However, the New Zealand bowlers struck back decisively after the resumption. William O’Rourke claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in the subcontinent, adding to Ajaz Patel’s early breakthrough to restrict Sri Lanka’s lead.

The New Zealand batting then came alive. Latham and Devon Conway put on a quick 63 for the first wicket before Conway fell for 17. Latham and Williamson then steadied the ship with a 63-run partnership, putting any chance of a Sri Lankan comeback on hold.

Latham missed out on a century, falling for 70, but Williamson continued to bat with composure. Rachin Ravindra provided a quickfire 39, adding impetus to the innings.

Despite losing Williamson and Ravindra in quick succession, New Zealand finished the day strongly thanks to a solid partnership between Daryl Mitchell (41*) and Tom Blundell (18*).

New Zealand will be looking to build on their strong finish and post a big first innings total when play resumes on Friday.
