Republican Senator J.D. Vance has been accused of spreading a false rumor about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, despite being told the story was baseless.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Vance’s office was informed by Springfield city manager Bryan Heck that claims of Haitian immigrants eating pets were unfounded. However, Vance shared the story on X (formerly Twitter), where it sparked widespread criticism.

The Journal also found that a woman who claimed a Haitian neighbor had taken her cat later apologized to her neighbors after the cat was found safe in her own basement.

Critics condemned Vance for spreading the misinformation, pointing out that it caused fear and division in the community.

Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg questioned Vance’s fitness for office, suggesting that his willingness to spread false information for political gain raises concerns about his judgment.

Political scientist David Darmofal summarized the situation by saying, “The Trump-Vance slogan should be Make America Springfield. Because they want to do to this country what they’ve done to Springfield.”
