**LONDON, September 19, 2024** – The public is invited to vote for their favorite image from a shortlist of stunning weather and climate photography in the Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 competition. The vote is open from September 19th to October 17th.
This year’s competition, now in its ninth year and organized by the Royal Meteorological Society, features thousands of entries from photographers worldwide. The shortlist showcases 25 outstanding images, including a Saharan dust storm, an ice halo, rare red sprite lightning, and breathtaking landscapes blanketed in hoarfrost.
The competition aims to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing our planet, highlighting the effects of heatwaves, cyclones, and extreme flooding. The shortlist gallery offers insights into the science behind the weather phenomena and the stories behind the images.
Professor Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, stated, “This year’s entrants have highlighted those regions of the world facing the worst impacts of climate change, but they also bring home the message that climate change is affecting weather patterns globally. We need to act now to make change happen.”
Marisa Drew, Chief Sustainability Officer at Standard Chartered, added, “This year’s shortlist showcases the impacts of our changing climate on communities and our natural environment. I look forward to seeing which photograph wins our new Climate Award, introduced this year to bring greater awareness to the importance of climate mitigation and adaptation.”
The winners will be announced on October 30th, 2024. To view the shortlist and cast your vote, visit the Royal Meteorological Society’s website.
