**Vancouver, British Columbia – September 17, 2024** – Prince George, British Columbia, is making strides towards a sustainable future, with Mayor Simon Yu highlighting the city’s advancements in hydrogen energy and carbon reduction initiatives at the Canadian Carbon Solutions Coalition (CCSC) reception today.

The reception, held alongside the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Vancouver, showcased Prince George’s role as a leader in clean energy development. Mayor Yu focused on the city’s ongoing hydrogen project, part of the $900 million H2 Gateway initiative spearheaded by Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (HTEC). This initiative, supported by a $337 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, aims to establish hydrogen production plants and refuelling stations in three BC communities, including Prince George.

“Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, and Prince George is proud to be at the forefront of this transition,” said Mayor Yu. “This project is not only a significant step in reducing carbon emissions, but it will also create new jobs and economic opportunities for our community.”

Mayor Yu emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments, industry, and First Nations in driving innovation towards a sustainable future. He highlighted the CCSC’s role in facilitating these partnerships, stating, “We need to come together, as we are today, to drive innovation in carbon solutions. The efforts of the CCSC and our hydrogen initiatives in Prince George demonstrate how we can make meaningful progress in the fight against climate change.”

In addition to the hydrogen project, Mayor Yu also spoke about the upcoming BC Natural Resources Forum (BCNRF), scheduled to take place in Prince George from January 14-16, 2025. This event will serve as a platform for leaders from government, First Nations, and the natural resources sector to discuss the future of the economy and environment, with carbon solutions playing a key role in the discussions.

The CCSC, committed to advancing carbon capture, transport, storage, and utilization technologies across Canada, brought together various organizations, including GeoScience BC, The City of Prince George, Kanata Clean Power, Svante, BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy, and CIELO Carbon Solutions, to share their work driving innovation in carbon solutions.

Prince George’s commitment to hydrogen energy and carbon reduction initiatives positions the city as a frontrunner in Canada’s transition towards a more sustainable future. With collaborative efforts between governments, industry, and First Nations, the city is poised to play a significant role in addressing climate change and creating a thriving, environmentally responsible economy.
