Thu Sep 19 18:08:56 UTC 2024: ## Modi Calls for ‘Political Sunset’ of Opposition Parties in J&K

**Katra, Jammu & Kashmir (September 19, 2024):** In a fiery address to voters ahead of the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the “political sunset” of the Congress, National Conference (NC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He accused these parties of inflicting wounds on the region for years and urged voters to ensure the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the polls.

Speaking at a rally in Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine, Modi criticized the Congress leadership for insulting Hindu gods and goddesses, calling it a deliberate act driven by a “Naxal mindset.” He questioned the voters if these leaders should not be punished for their actions.

This was Modi’s second election rally in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, following an earlier address in Srinagar. He has been actively campaigning in the region this week, having addressed a rally in Doda district on September 14.

“This election is for choosing the future of Jammu and Kashmir,” Modi emphasized, calling it a chance to take the “new Jammu and Kashmir” to new heights. He highlighted the BJP’s commitment to the region, claiming it had prioritized the interests of the people and ended decades of discrimination.

“We have to ensure the political sunset of these parties by pressing the button next to the lotus,” Modi urged, referring to the BJP’s symbol. He rallied support for the party, chanting the slogan “Abki baar, BJP sarkar.”

Modi’s rallies come after the first phase of polling concluded on Wednesday, covering 24 constituencies in seven south Kashmir districts and the Chenab valley region. The first phase recorded over 61% voter turnout.
