**ST. LOUIS, MO -** The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford to start Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to reports from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Woodford, who was on a minor league contract with the Pirates, will be making his third appearance in the majors this season. He previously pitched for the White Sox earlier in the year, before rejoining the Pirates for a brief stint.
The move comes as the Pirates placed right-hander Kyle Nicolas on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 17, with a left oblique strain. Righty Ben Heller was also transferred to the 60-day IL, ending his season due to right shoulder inflammation.
Woodford, a 27-year-old former Cardinals pitcher, was selected by St. Louis in the first round (39th overall) of the 2015 draft. He pitched for the Cardinals for four seasons, compiling a 4.29 ERA across 184.2 innings.
The Pirates currently have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move to accommodate Woodford’s addition. However, with Woodford being out of options, he cannot be sent back to the minors without going through waivers. There is a possibility that the team could remove him from the 40-man roster in the off-season.
The Pirates’ decision to promote Woodford has sparked debate among fans, with many expressing frustration over the team’s continued struggles and perceived lack of direction. Many fans believe the team should focus on giving opportunities to younger prospects, particularly pitcher Mike Burrows who is already on the 40-man roster.
Despite the negative sentiment, the Pirates are hoping that Woodford can provide some stability on the mound as they look to finish the season strong. The Cardinals, however, will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in the Pirates’ pitching staff as they vie for a playoff spot.
