**New York, NY** – A 49-year-old New Yorker, Gregory Delpeche, is currently in critical condition after being struck by a stray bullet during a police shooting at a Brooklyn subway station on Sunday. The incident occurred when two NYPD officers confronted a man who allegedly evaded fare and subsequently threatened them with a knife.
Delpeche, who was riding the subway to work, was hit in a separate car from the alleged fare evader. He has undergone cranial surgery to reduce swelling from the bullet wound in his head and is currently sedated and breathing through a tube, according to his cousin, Greg Nougues.
“Right now, we’re in a waiting game,” Nougues stated, adding that the family is seeking legal representation.
The incident has sparked outrage and questions about police tactics, particularly in the wake of a bystander video showing a chaotic scene with fleeing passengers and injured individuals.
The alleged fare evader, a 37-year-old man, is also hospitalized with gunshot wounds. While police claim he threatened officers with a knife and ignored multiple attempts to subdue him with tasers, the incident raises concerns about the safety of innocent bystanders.
In response, Mayor Eric Adams expressed sympathy for the victims, particularly Delpeche and a 26-year-old woman who was grazed by a bullet. He also defended the officers’ actions, claiming they responded appropriately after observing the perpetrator’s alleged threats.
“This is not a city where any and everything goes,” Adams stated, emphasizing the importance of enforcing fare evasion and maintaining order.
The incident is currently under investigation as police and transportation officials review additional video footage of the event.
