Wed Sep 18 16:47:55 UTC 2024: ## B.C. Offers $20,000 Grants for Road Safety Projects

**Victoria, BC** – The British Columbia government is once again offering funding to organizations working towards Vision Zero, a goal of eliminating road fatalities and serious injuries. For the fourth consecutive year, the province is providing $20,000 grants to support projects that enhance road safety.

Organizations eligible to apply include school districts, parent advisory councils, safety advocacy groups, Indigenous friendship centres, charities, and municipal and Indigenous governments. The funding can be used for a variety of road safety initiatives, such as upgrading roadways, launching educational campaigns, implementing new policies, or introducing enforcement measures.

“These future projects can eliminate preventable fatalities and, at the same time, foster more active and ecologically friendly transportation,” stated Dr. Murray Fyfe, a medical health officer at Island Health. “Every step we take toward safer roads translates into healthier lives and a more resilient health system.”

The need for road safety measures is significant. Every year, 79,000 British Columbians are injured in motor vehicle crashes, and 250 lose their lives.

In 2022 alone, Island Health distributed $170,000 in Vision Zero grants, funding projects such as improved lighting and road signage, road safety education for children, and licensing support for new drivers in remote areas.

Applications for the Vision Zero in Road Safety Grant Program are open until November 29th. Interested organizations can find more information and application details at http://www.visionzerobc.ca.
