Thu Sep 19 17:09:16 UTC 2024: ## Modi to Discuss Global Issues and Quad Initiatives During US Visit

**New Delhi, September 19, 2023:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three-day visit to the United States this week, where he will participate in the Quad Summit, address the UN General Assembly, and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders. The visit will focus on key global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Gaza crisis, and the Indo-Pacific region’s stability.

The Quad Summit, hosted by US President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware on September 21st, will see Modi alongside leaders of Australia, Japan, and the US discuss new initiatives to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. The summit will also address shared priorities like sustainable development, climate change, and health security.

A highlight of the summit will be the launch of the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative, a collaborative effort to prevent, detect, and treat cancer across the Indo-Pacific. The partners are also expected to announce new investments and capacity building programs.

During his bilateral meeting with President Biden, Modi is set to announce India’s formal participation in two pillars of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF): the “clean economy” and “fair economy” pillars. India had previously joined the “supply chains” pillar and is still discussing participation in the “trade” pillar.

Modi will then travel to New York for a series of engagements, including an interaction with the Indian diaspora on September 22nd and the Summit of the Future at the UN General Assembly on September 23rd. On the sidelines of the General Assembly, he will hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders.

The Indian government has indicated that the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in Gaza will be discussed at both the Quad Summit and bilateral meetings. While India has refrained from publicly proposing specific solutions to end the war in Ukraine, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed ongoing discussions between leaders and indicated a possibility of India presenting proposals if consensus is reached.

Regarding the Gaza crisis, India has consistently advocated for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas. The government also supports the establishment of a humanitarian corridor for delivering aid and seeks a “sustainable and broad-based settlement” based on a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

At the Summit of the Future, Modi will emphasize India’s commitment to inclusive, equitable, and sustainable development, South-South cooperation, and addressing the concerns of the Global South. He will highlight the importance of tackling global challenges like the “deficit of development” and ensuring the Global South is not left behind.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US promises to be a significant event, showcasing India’s commitment to global peace, stability, and development.
