**MONTREAL –** Montreal police have arrested two individuals in connection to an online drug trafficking operation, following an investigation into the death of 15-year-old Mathis Boivin, who fatally overdosed on a synthetic opioid last December.

Laxshan Mylvaganam, 24, and a 17-year-old whose identity is protected, were apprehended on Tuesday and charged with drug trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Police seized nearly a thousand counterfeit pills containing dangerous synthetic opioids, including nitazene, during searches of three homes and a vehicle.

Cmdr. Yannick Desmarais stated that the accused operated an online store selling drugs, including pills, and used social media to attract customers. The drugs for sale included pills containing nitazene, a synthetic opioid more potent than fentanyl.

Mathis Boivin ingested a pill containing nitazene purchased from the online store, leading to his death in his home. His father, Christian Boivin, has since become a vocal advocate for opioid awareness and his son’s death garnered widespread media attention.

Following Mylvaganam’s arraignment, Boivin expressed satisfaction with the investigation, stating, “I feel like there’s been some justice.” He commended the police for their efforts, emphasizing the importance of their work in combatting the opioid crisis.

While the investigation is linked to Boivin’s case, the arrested individuals have not been charged with his death. Desmarais explained that police would need to establish who specifically sold the fatal pill to Mathis to lay further charges. The investigation remains ongoing, and Desmarais indicated that additional charges are possible.

Boivin urged parents to engage their children in conversations about the dangers of opioids and to be aware of the signs of an overdose. He emphasized the importance of equipping children with information to protect themselves and seek help if necessary.
