**St. Petersburg, FL** – Space Perspective, a Florida-based company, has successfully completed a major test flight for its Spaceship Neptune – Excelsior, a luxury balloon capsule designed to transport passengers to the edge of space.
The uncrewed flight, which took place on September 15th, launched from the Marine Spaceport Voyager off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida. Over six hours, the capsule ascended to an altitude of approximately 100,000 feet, reaching above 99% of Earth’s atmosphere. After a controlled descent, the capsule successfully splashed down.
This test flight validated several key technologies crucial for future commercial spaceflights. “This is a defining moment for Space Perspective,” stated Taber MacCallum, Founder and Chief Technology Officer. “This uncrewed flight not only proves our technology but also brings us closer to making space accessible for everyone.”
Jane Poynter, co-founder of Space Perspective, emphasized the accessibility and gentle nature of the spaceflight experience: “This demonstration shows how accessible and gentle our spaceflight experience will be, bringing space travel within reach for more people than ever.”
The company plans to initiate human spaceflights in 2025, with commercial operations beginning in 2026. Over 1,800 tickets have already been sold at a cost of $125,000 per seat.
Each flight will carry up to eight passengers in a pressurized capsule, gently ascending to an altitude of over 32km. Passengers will enjoy world-class food and beverage service, comfortable seating, and amenities such as custom headphones.
