**The Hague, Netherlands -** In a coordinated international effort, law enforcement agencies have successfully dismantled an encrypted communication platform known as Ghost, a platform notorious for facilitating large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering. The operation, which spanned multiple countries, resulted in the arrest of 51 suspects with more expected.
Ghost, marketed to criminal organizations as “unhackable,” was built by 32-year-old Australian Jay Je Yoon Jung, who was also arrested as part of the operation. Despite its claims, global police investigators were able to infiltrate the network and monitored criminal activities including drug trafficking, money laundering, homicides, and violent crimes.
Authorities launched simultaneous raids on Tuesday and Wednesday, apprehending criminals in Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Canada, and Australia. The platform’s advanced security features had made it popular among criminal organizations, making its dismantling a significant blow to global criminal networks.
Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, hailed the operation as a major victory. “This was truly a global game of cat and mouse, and today, the game is up,” said Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Europol’s deputy executive director. The operation not only prevented multiple threats to life, but also led to the dismantling of a drug lab in Australia and the seizure of weapons, drugs, and over €1 million in cash across the globe.
“Today we have made it clear that no matter how hidden criminal networks think they are, they can’t evade our collective effort,” said Catherine De Bolle, Europol’s executive director. “Ghost was a lifeline for serious organized crime.”
The operation involved authorities from Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States, underscoring the global commitment to combating organized crime. Authorities anticipate further disruption of illegal activities as the investigation continues.
