**Abuja, Nigeria** – The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the impending release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, starting on September 17, 2023. The controlled release, initiated by dam authorities, is expected to gradually increase to 1000m³/s over the next seven days, driven by increased inflow from the Garoua River.
While the NIHSA assures the public that major flooding is not anticipated, the agency has urged heightened vigilance from states bordering the Benue River system, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers. The agency has also called for increased preparedness measures at all levels of government to mitigate any potential flooding impacts.
The Lagdo Dam, located on the Benue River in Cameroon, is a crucial factor in water flow levels for the Benue River in Nigeria. Past water releases from the dam have often caused concern due to their potential to exacerbate flooding in Nigeria, especially in light of recent devastating floods in Borno State which claimed over 30 lives and affected over a million people.
The NIHSA has committed to continuously monitoring water levels in the Benue River and other inland rivers, providing regular updates to prevent further flood disasters.
