Wed Sep 18 17:59:00 UTC 2024: ## Canary Islands Shaken by 30 Earthquakes in 48 Hours

**Las Palmas, Canary Islands -** The Canary Islands have experienced a series of 30 earthquakes in just two days, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN). The tremors were triggered by eruptions from the Enmedio volcano, located between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The underwater volcano, which sits just 500 meters below sea level, erupted 30 times between September 12 and 14, following 39 eruptions recorded between September 7 and 12. The strongest earthquake, a 3.6 magnitude tremor, occurred on September 12.

While tremors in the region are not uncommon, the recent frequency has raised some eyebrows. However, experts from the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) have assured the public that the eruptions and subsequent earthquakes are unlikely to cause any significant impact on the islands.

“The probability of an earthquake in the area of the Enmedio volcano reaching a magnitude sufficient to cause damage is very low,” Involcan stated.

This latest volcanic activity comes just two years after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge on the island of La Palma, which lasted for 85 days. Although the eruption caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, no casualties were reported.
