Wed Sep 18 17:56:00 UTC 2024: ## PCOS Awareness Remains Low Despite Impacting Millions of Women
A new study reveals a significant lack of awareness about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common condition affecting one in ten women in the UK. The research, conducted by Philips Lumea IPL hair removal devices, surveyed 2,000 adults and found that four in ten had never heard of PCOS.
Despite its prevalence, many are unaware of the range of symptoms associated with the condition. Only 30% knew about excessive hair growth, while less than half recognized infertility (53%) and irregular periods (46%) as potential signs.
The study highlights the impact of PCOS on women’s lives. Almost two-thirds (72%) experience at least one symptom, including weight gain, acne, and excess hair growth, without necessarily knowing the connection to PCOS. Many women feel self-conscious and struggle with confidence due to these symptoms.
“This is a remarkably common condition that there’s not enough awareness of,” said Chloé Fallon, beauty expert for Philips Lumea. “It is something that affects millions of women around the world but is rarely spoken about openly.”
The study also found that 76% of adults believe men should be more informed about women’s health issues like PCOS. Social media influencer Zoe Antonia shared her own experience with PCOS, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue about the condition.
“My PCOS journey started at 17,” she shared. “My body and facial hair growth made me feel so self-conscious as a teen… sharing such raw unfiltered images online became a source of strength and helped me to build confidence outside of my looks.”
Philips Lumea, along with other organizations, are working to raise awareness about PCOS during PCOS Awareness Month in September. The aim is to break the stigma surrounding the condition and encourage open conversations about its impact and management.
