**New Delhi, India** – A leading gastroenterologist has issued a warning about common drinks that may be exacerbating heartburn and acid reflux symptoms. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, in a recent Instagram post, revealed that lemon water, sodas, and apple cider vinegar, despite being popular choices for relief, can actually worsen these conditions.
“I see many patients with heartburn and acid reflux daily,” Dr. Sethi wrote. “These are three of the top mistakes I’ve seen them make.”
Heartburn and acid reflux occur when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest. This can be triggered by stress, certain foods, and even beverages.
Dr. Sethi explained that the acidity in lemon water can irritate the esophagus, while the carbon dioxide in sodas increases stomach pressure, forcing acid back up. He also noted that the sugar in regular sodas can worsen symptoms. Apple cider vinegar, despite its supposed benefits, is actually acidic and can contribute to heartburn.
Instead of these popular but problematic drinks, Dr. Sethi recommends healthier alternatives such as plain water, herbal teas (like chamomile, peppermint, and ginger), and milk, which can help neutralize stomach acid.
“If you continue to experience heartburn or acid reflux despite making these changes, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional,” Dr. Sethi advised. “By avoiding these three drinks and making other lifestyle changes, you can manage heartburn and acid reflux symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.”
